Doctor Who Magazine - Issue 426

The cover and info on this month's edition of Doctor Who Magazine:

This months Doctor Who Magazine talks to the man who provides the voices for the Doctor’s greatest enemies, the Daleks and the Cybermen. Nicholas Briggs tells all about his time as a Dalek, his life-long love of Doctor Who and just what he can do with his ring voice modulator.

It’s great for people to be able to hear the voice on set. The way I say my lines does change depending on how David, Chris, or Matt say their lines to me. The Daleks actually being there makes such a difference. Much of the time, the cast is acting against silver balls on sticks, in front of a green screen, but Daleks move around, flash their lights, speak like they want to kill you, like a voice from hell.

Also in the magazine:
  • He’s one of the best-loved and most respected authors in the world - and now he’s written a Doctor Who book. Michael Moorcock talks to DWM about his new novel The Coming of the Terraphiles - plus there's also an exclusive extract.
  • Toby Haynes, director of the 2010 series finale, concludes his exclusive Director’s Diary and tells DWM how Doctor Who changed his life.
  • Tokyo’s children are turning into Axons - and the Doctor, Amy and UNIT are involved in a breathtaking fight for their lives! All in the second part of the DWM comic strip The Golden Ones, by Jonathan Morris with art by Martin Geraghty.
  • What do the Eleventh Doctor, Jo Grant and K9 have in common? They’re all in the fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, which is back on TV in October. DWM previews all twelve new episodes and talks to all the writers - Russell T Davies, Phil Ford, Joseph Lidster, Rupert Laight, Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman.
  • The Doctor and his companions appreciate the gravity of the situation as they leap around on the Moon and encounter the sinister Cybermen! The Fact of Fiction scrutinizes the 1967 adventure The Moonbase and extracts a wealth of information from this classic Second Doctor tale.
  • DWM presents the ultimate guide to the men of steel - the Cybermen. Discover how they’ve evolved over the decades, as the Watcher reveals everything you need to know - and some surprising secrets, about one of the Doctor’s most persistent foes.
  • He’s back. Former UNIT Captain Mike Yates has returned to action alongside the Fourth Doctor in the new audio series Demon Quest. DWM catches up with the man who plays him, actor Richard Franklin, and finds out what he thinks about Yates’ comeback - and his opinion of Doctor Who today.
  • Doctor Who’s showrunner Steven Moffat provides some clues as to what adventures lie in store for the Doctor, Amy and Rory, and has the last word on what the next season should be called - in Production Notes.
Issue 426 of Doctor Who Magazine is on sale now until 19th October at all good newsagents priced £2.20 per copy.

The Sarah Jane Adventures: Series Four - First Synopsis

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (out today - more info coming soon) has revealed the first synopsis for each story from the highly anticipated fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures:

The Nightmare Man
It's a huge, life changing story for Luke. It's a pivotal time of his life and he starts to dream in a way he's never dreamed before.

Luke starts having some pretty scary nightmares. Luke's not fully human even though his brain is, and he's always been an outsider who has been a bit non-plussed by the world.

It's about a creature called the Nightmare Man. He lives in our dreams and feeds on them. And he's hungry.

The Vault of Secrets
Sarah Jane and the gang become reacquainted with Androvax.

Gita has not forgotten what she saw in Prisoner of the Judoon. Keen to share her experiences, Gita attends a meeting of the British UFO Research and Paranormal Studies Society (BURPSS) led by Ocean Waters, a lady who has previously had her own alien encounters.

Also appearing for the first time in The Sarah Jane Adventures are the Men in Black lead by Mr Dread.

Death of the Doctor
Phil Ford was originally meant to write this story - then CBBC commissioned the first half of series five to be shot at the same time as series four. We meet the Groske who are completely different to the Graske.

We have a new UNIT colonel, Colonel Karim and it takes place in a secret UNIT base under Mount Snowden.

The Empty Planet
Its a normal day for Clyde and Rani. Until they realise they are the only people on the Earth.

This is going to be one of the most memorable episodes of SJA. It's for all the 6 year olds who've never seen 28 Days Later and The Omega Man.

As the Story unfolds, it transpires that Clyde and Rani are not quite alone and they soon encounter some formidable robotic adversarys. This scrip gave the crew two big challenges - robots and an empty planet. I saw the rushes and my jaw dropped.

Lost in Time
It's an old-fashioned historical sci-fi adventure with a Sarah Jane Adventures twist. Something's messing up the course of history and our gang have to go back to three different points in time to put it right. Theres a spooky antiques shop. And an even spookier antiques shopkeeper. Oh, and a parrot.

This is an unusual story as there are three stories in one. Sarah Jane ends up in an empty Victorian house, Rani ends up in the Tower of London and Cylde ends up in 1941 on the beaches of Southern England where a Nazi invasion is taking place.

The great result though is that we have three - or maybe four - cliffhangers to end Part One. Now thats value for money!

Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith
The series comes to a dramatic climax when Sarah Jane finds an unexpected ally when it comes to saving the world. Ruby White, alien investigator, moves in around the corner from Sarah Jane. After all, Ealing is is a hotbed of strange activity.

As well as being a good romp, there are some quite serious elements. It's about Sarah Jane aging and the insecurity that can come as you get older.

We've got a spaceship. We venture up to the stars. The whole world is in peril and we see a brand new team come together to fight it.

The new series of The Sarah Jane Adventures starts next month. More details coming soon. In other news: official promo images from the first story in the next series of SJA, The Nightmare Man, have been released. You can view them here on Blogtor Who.

Adventures Games - Second Series Confirmed!

The BBC have confirmed that a second series of the Doctor Who Adventure Games will be available to download throughout next year:

Such has been the success of the PC and Mac Doctor Who Adventure Games series that the BBC has confirmed that the games will return for a second series in 2011.

To date the first three Adventure Games have been downloaded over 1.6m times, with a fourth release due out later this year.

The new games will once again be produced by Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis, along with Anwen Aspden and be developed by Sumo Digital.

Screen stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillen will also return in digital form.

“Given the success of the first series, we'd be daft not to recomission,” BBC’s head of multiplatform in vision Simon Nelson stated.

“But it's not just about the numbers; the feedback we've had has been overwhelmingly positive. Our audience has been introduced to a new form of drama – and, for many, these have been the first computer games they have downloaded. We've set new standards in audience participation - and we think we've really helped push the concept of families actively playing together. I can't wait to see what the team does next.”
