An Adventure in Space and Time - Poster & Press Pack
The BBC Media Centre has released a new press pack concerning the one-off Doctor Who origins drama An Adventure in Space and Time, read on for further details:
An Adventure in Space and Time
This special one-off drama travels back in time to 1963 to see how the beloved Doctor Who was first brought to the screen.
Actor William Hartnell felt trapped by a succession of hard-man roles. Wannabe producer Verity Lambert was frustrated by the TV industry’s glass ceiling. Both of them were to find unlikely hope and unexpected challenges in the form of a Saturday tea-time drama, time travel and monsters!
Allied with a team of brilliant people, they went on to create the longest-running science fiction series ever, now celebrating its 50th anniversary.
David Bradley plays William Hartnell
Acclaimed actor David Bradley talks here about taking on the portrayal of an actor he greatly admired and transforming himself into the Doctor.
A popular screen star, well regarded by his peers, William Hartnell was born in St Pancras, London in 1908. He appeared in numerous plays, films and TV shows, often playing the ‘tough guy’ role as typified by his character in the comedy The Army Game, which ran from 1957 to 1961, just prior to Doctor Who.
When he was first approached, Hartnell was widely reported to have been unconvinced by the role of Doctor.
“It has to be said”, explains David, “after some initial reluctance to do something for children’s TV, I think he was quickly convinced that it was the right thing for him to do. He felt quite insecure about it as it was new territory for him, but once he started he embraced the whole idea of the part.”
An Adventure in Space and Time tells the story behind the beginnings of Doctor Who and the team of personalities behind it. Known as a perfectionist, Hartnell was widely regarded as cantankerous by colleagues. But as David explains the script for Space and Time reveals a full picture of Bill, including the good and the bad.
An Adventure in Space and Time will broadcast Thursday 21st November at 9:00pm on BBC Two and BBC Two HD.

The Science of Doctor Who - Synopsis
The BBC Media Centre has released the synopsis for a one-off program investigating the science of Doctor Who, presented by Professor Brian Cox:
For one night only, Professor Brian Cox explores the universe of the world’s favourite Timelord, Doctor Who.
Brian takes an audience, with the help of celebrity guests, on a journey into the wonderful universe of The Doctor, in a specially recorded programme from the lecture theatre of the Royal Institution of Great Britain.
Brian reveals the science behind the spectacle and explains the physics that allows Doctor Who to travel through space and time. Fun, but filled with real science, it’s a special night for Who fans as well anyone with a thirst for understanding.
Brian is in the unique position of knowing the Doctor’s universe inside out as well as the reality behind the drama. When the Tardis travels through time and space, Brian understands the physics involved. And when it comes to life on other planets, Brian knows the real science that could prove extra-terrestrial life might just really exist in our galaxy.
The Science of Doctor Who will broadcast on Thursday 14th November at 9:00pm on BBC Two and BBC Two HD. In other news: the BBC have confirmed that Doctor Who is to feature in some way in this year's Children in Need night, more details are to be confirmed.

Doctor & Dalek Figure Sets - Wave 3
Character Options have revealed their third and final wave of Doctor Who Doctor & Dalek figure sets - exclusive to Toys R Us, read on for further details:
Highly detailed and realistic action figure collection that celebrates 50 years of Doctor Who. Each pack includes a fully poseable 5-inch Doctor and a free-wheeling Dalek from the same era that features moveable eye stalk and gun arm.
First Doctor & Dalek from The Daleks' Master Plan
The Doctor is a mysterious character from another time and another world. He has a time machine called the Tardis, which is disguised as a police box and was bigger on the inside than on the outside. Discovering the Tardis in a scrapyard, two teachers are involuntarily taken on a journey back to the year 100,000 BC, and end up adventuring through time and space with the Doctor.
Third Doctor & Dalek from Planet of the Daleks
Exiled to Earth, this sophisticated and elegant Doctor was more of a pure scientist than his predecessors, surrounded by gadgets and vehicles. But whether aiding UNIT against invasions or travelling to distant planets, his kindness and belief in peace was rarely stronger. After returning a jewel to an irradiated cave on an alien planet, the Doctor’s body was so badly damaged he had to regenerate once again…
Fourth Doctor & Dalek from Genesis of the Daleks
The Fourth Doctor masked his brilliant and inventive mind behind a façade of bohemian eccentricity. The longest lived incarnation of the Doctors so far, he was forced to change his body after losing a fight with his old enemy the Master and falling from a radio telescope to the ground beneath him.
Eighth Doctor & Dalek from Children of the Revolution
Passionate about life and the beauty of the world about him, this Doctor’s love of humanity drove him to fight his old foe the Master deep within the heart of his own Tardis. It remains unclear when, how or why exactly he regenerated into his Ninth body, but he had clearly done so shortly before meeting Rose Tyler on Earth.
Eleventh Doctor & Dalek from Asylum of the Daleks
By his own admission, the Eleventh Doctor is a genius and a madman. He has the same sparking intelligence as his predecessors but it seems to be firing in every direction at once. He has the curious innocence of a child mixed with the ancient wisdom of the centuries, and leaves everyone around him racing to keep up. He can seem clumsy and chaotic but only a foolish enemy would underestimate him. As always he has a powerful sense of right and wrong and a determination to do what’s right.
All five figure sets are on sale from early November exclusively at Toys R Us stores priced £19.99 each.

Missing Episodes - 9 Recovered!
The BBC have today confirmed which classic Doctor Who episodes have been recovered for the first time since their broadcasts nearly 50 years ago, read on for further details:
Lost Doctor Who Episodes Recovered!
11 episodes from the 1960s, nine of which have not been seen for over 45 years, will launch exclusively on iTunes today (Friday 11th October).
BBC Worldwide is delighted to announce that nine recordings from the 1960s featuring missing episodes of Doctor Who, the world’s longest running sci-fi drama, have been recovered in Nigeria, Africa.
11 Doctor Who episodes were discovered (nine of which were missing) by Phillip Morris, director of Television International Enterprises Archive, by the tracking records of overseas shipments made by the BBC containing tapes for transmission. BBC Worldwide has re-mastered these episodes to restore them to the fantastic quality that audiences expect from Doctor Who.
The stories recovered are The Enemy of the World (1967) and The Web of Fear (1968), both starring Patrick Troughton as the second Doctor.
The Enemy of the World, is the fourth six-part tale of the show's original fifth season which first aired on the BBC in December 1967. Episodes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 had been missing from the BBC archives.
Alongside Patrick Troughton who plays both the Time Lord and his antagonist (Ramon Salamander) are his companions Frazer Hines (Jamie) and Deborah Watling (Victoria).
Also recovered is the 1968 six-part story, The Web of Fear. Episodes 2 - 6 were feared lost forever but now episodes 2, 4, 5, and 6 have been recovered. Unfortunately, episode three is still missing but a restoration team has reconstructed this part of the story using a selection of the 37 images that were available from the episode along with the original audio which has been restored.
Also starring Patrick Troughton alongside Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling, The Web of Fear introduces Nicholas Courtney for the first time as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart (who later returns as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart).
All episodes will be available to download exclusively from iTunes on 11th October. The Enemy of the World will also be available to pre-order exclusively on DVD from BBC Shop from 11th October for release on 25th November. The Web of Fear will be available on DVD from early 2014.
Phillip Morris says: "The tapes had been left gathering dust in a store room at a television relay station in Nigeria. I remember wiping the dust off the masking tape on the canisters and my heart missed a beat as I saw the words Doctor Who. When I read the story code I realised I’d found something pretty special."
Fiona Eastwood, director of consumer products, BBC Worldwide comments: "We are thrilled with the recent discovery of The Web of Fear and The Enemy of the World and we’re very happy to be launching re-mastered versions of these treasured episodes to fans as we celebrate the 50th year of Doctor Who."
On the 23rd November 2013, Doctor Who celebrates 50 years since the very first episode, An Unearthly Child, aired on BBC television. A number of episodes from the first series of Doctor Who were lost as a result of BBC Archive space-saving measures and there are still 27 Doctor Who stories that are missing or have incomplete episodes.
Both stories are available to purchase on iTunes now and are also to have an almost-immediate DVD release on 25th November and early 2014 respectively. In other news: Neve McIntosh who plays Madame Vastra in Doctor Who has confirmed that she will return to the show in series eight along with Catrin Stewart (Jenny Flint) and Dan Starky (Strax) to aid Peter Capaldi's Doctor.

Latest News!
A round-up of the latest news regarding the future of Doctor Who:
12th DOCTOR - PAST CAPALDI APPEARANCES NOT TO BE IGNORED
Steven Moffat has commented in an interview with Nerd³ that the past appearences of to-be Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi in both Doctor Who and Torchwood will not be ignored and possibly create a story arc for the next series, read on for further details from Moffat's interview:
"We are aware that Peter Capaldi’s played a big old part in Doctor Who and Torchwood before and we are not going to ignore the fact."
" remember Russell [T Davies] told me that he had a big old plan as to why there were two Peter Capaldi’s in the Who universe: one in Pompeii and one in Torchwood. When I cast Peter and Russell got in touch to say how pleased he was, I said, ‘Okay, what was your theory and does it still work?” and he said, ‘Yes it does. Here it is…’"
"We’ll play that one out over time. It’s actually quite neat."
He adds: "The face is not set from birth. It’s not like he was always going to be one day Peter Capaldi. We know that’s the case because in The War Games he has a choice of faces. So we know it’s not set, so where does he get those faces from? They can’t just be randomly generated because they’ve got lines. They’ve aged. When he turns into Peter he’ll actually have lines on his face. So where did that face come from?"
Peter Capaldi will make his Doctor Who debut in this year's Christmas special on BBC One and BBC One HD.
MOFFAT "PROBABLY DONE" WRITING ABOUT THE WEEPING ANGELS
Continuing on from his interview with Nerd³, Moffat said that his "probably done" writing anymore episodes of Doctor Who featuring the Weeping Angels, but hasn't ruled out any other writers using them in future stories:
"I’m probably done to be honest on what you can do with the Weeping Angels. But other writers have to have a go. There’s only so many times you can think, ‘Right, it’s a chase scene and statues’. How many times can the lights flicker? What happens if a moth sees them? Is the alien invasion cancelled at that point?"
However, Moffat reveals another Doctor Who writer recently pitched a new story starring the Lonely Assassins: "It’s not going to happen but a very good Doctor Who writer pitched a great idea for the Weeping Angels the other day and I was very excited about it."
"We had a long phone call about it and I went away thinking, ‘That is going to be brilliant!’ And about two days later he admitted he wasn’t going to have time to do it. Hopefully we’ll get to it in the next year."
RIVER SONG TO RETURN?
Alex Kingston who played River Song in Doctor Who has recently teased that the character might make a return to the show in the future, despite what writer Steven Moffat has previously said on thinking the character's story is "done".
Speaking in a BBC America video, she said: "I look forward to sharing more of [River] with you in the future, but… spoilers!"
Rumours have suggested that River will appear in current Doctor Matt Smith’s final episode this Christmas, although could the character also carry over to Peter Capaldi’s era.
