Room 101 host Frank Skinner is the latest name confirmed to guest star in an episode of the new series of Doctor Who this Autumn.

Skinner says: "I love this show. I subscribe to Doctor Who magazine, I’ve got a Tardis ringtone, a five-foot cardboard Dalek in my bedroom and when I got the call saying they wanted me to read for the part, I was in the back of my tour bus watching episode three of The Sensorites. I am beyond excited."

He is currently touring the UK with his stand-up show Frank Skinner: Man In a Suit, alongside presenting the Saturday Morning Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio. Skinner previously appeared in the one-off Doctor Who 50th anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

He’s been volunteering to be "third monster on the left" as long as I’ve been in this job. But now, in Jamie Mathieson’s sparkling script, we finally have a part that can showcase all of Frank’s famous wit and charm. Hopefully he’ll get out of my garden now."

The episode is written by Jamie Mathieson (Being Human, Dirk Gently), directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids), and also stars David Bamber, Daisy Beaumont, Janet Henfrey and Christopher Villiers.

Skinner's Doctor Who episode is set to air this Autumn on BBC One and BBC One HD. In other news: American director Rachel Talalay is set to direct two episodes from series eight, more details coming soon.

Peter Capaldi Dons Radio Times Cover

The latest issue of the Radio Times features the Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi on the cover, as well as an interview with Steven Moffat, read on for further details:

In this week’s Radio Times, on sale Tuesday 13th May 2014 (for listings 17th-23rd May 2014) Steven Moffat recalls writing the Day of the Doctor, revealing it was the most “difficult” and “terrifying” thing he has ever written and reveals why he chose Peter Capaldi to be the new Doctor.

Steven Moffat writes: “When you choose a Doctor, you want somebody who is utterly compelling, attractive in a very odd way. None of the Doctors are conventionally attractive, but they’re all arresting. Handsome men don’t quite suit. Matt Smith’s a young, good-looking bloke from one angle but is actually the strangest looking man from another. You need that oddity; you need somebody who is carved out of solid star, really. Doctor Who is a whopping great star vehicle, despite the fact it changes star every so often.”

The Day of the Doctor is one of the nominees for this year’s Radio Times Audience Award at the British Academy Television Awards 2014 - the only BAFTA award open to public vote. Voting is open until 12:00pm Thursday 15th May, the winner will be announced on Sunday 18 May.

The new issue of Radio Times also includes 16-page guide to the Bafta TV Awards 2014 featuring David Attenborough, Dominic West, Rory Kinnear, Helen George, Laura Carmichael, Natalie Dormer and much, MUCH more…

This edition of Radio Times is on sale from today all good newsagents until 23rd May priced £1.99 per copy.

Series 8 - Hermione Norris to Guest Star

The BBC have announced yet another guest star to appear in the next series of Doctor Who, read on for further details:

Hermione Norris to guest star in Doctor Who opposite Peter Capaldi when Doctor Who returns this Autumn.

Speaking about her casting, Hermione Norris said, ‘It’s exciting to be part of such an iconic show, and one that my kids can watch!!!’

Norris has recently been starring in The Crimson Field on BBC One, and is no stranger to solving mysteries having played Ros Myers in the BAFTA award-winning drama Spooks. Prior to that she starred in comedy-drama Cold Feet.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, said, ‘It's a testament to the quality of Peter Harness's intense and emotional script, that we've been able to attract an actress of the brilliance of Hermione Norris. And for the first time since 1984, the Doctor Who production team is heading to Lanzarote. The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure - but there have been sinister changes since his last visit.’

The episode is written by Peter Harness (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Wallander), produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids). The episode also stars Ellis George, Tony Osoba and Phil Nice.

Norris's episode is set to air this Autumn on BBC One and BBC One HD.

Series 8 - BBC's First Reaction to Twelfth Doctor

After reviewing recently completed Doctor Who episodes, the BBC is said to be "thrilled" with Peter Capaldi's incarnation of the Doctor, read on for further details:

The BBC is said to be “delighted” and "thrilled" with the first episodes of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who.

Around five are understood to have been completed and a source on the show says that Capaldi looks on course to “make one of the best Doctors ever”.The storylines have started from "the bottom up” with Capaldi’s Doctor having a clean slate of storylines with little reference to his predecessors.

"He is his own man - very distinctive," said the source. Early indications are that Capaldi is making an excellent Time Lord - with a "sizzling" chemistry between him and co-star Jenna Coleman, according to show sources. The further good news for fans is that the chemistry between Capaldi and Coleman is said to be “sizzling”.

“He is the oldest Doctor and there is a sense he is more distanced from his assistant, more of a mystery He is perhaps less a mate, and someone she looks up to. She has to try and gauge him - but dramatically it’s very satisfying and onscreen they work very well together.”

His performance is also thought to have echoes of other Doctors, most especially Jon Pertwee's third incarnation, who Capaldi's look most closely resembles. But he is also a Doctor for a "modern age", said the source.

“There is a real buzz about this Doctor,” added the source. “And of course the monsters are great.” Capaldi will sport a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as stylish black Dr Marten shoes.

The look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden and is understood to have been in collaboration with Capaldi himself, as well as key Doctor Who executives including showrunner Steven Moffat and controller of BBC drama commissioning Ben Stephenson.

Capaldi has already said of his costume: “He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

Filming for episode one of series eight of Doctor Who began in January, after 10.2 million viewers saw the Christmas Day episode in which Capadli first appeared - still wearing the costume of previous incumbent Matt Smith.

Doctor Who returns this Autumn to BBC One and BBC One HD.

A weary, angry Doctor leads a flotilla of Battle Tardises against the Dalek stronghold but in the midst of the carnage, the Doctor’s Tardis crashes to a planet below: Moldox.

As the Doctor is trapped in an apocalyptic landscape, Dalek patrols roam amongst the wreckage, rounding up the remaining civilians. But why haven’t the Daleks simply killed the humans?

Searching for answers the Doctor meets ‘Cinder’, a young Dalek hunter. Their struggles to discover the Dalek plan take them from the ruins of Moldox to the halls of Gallifrey, and set in motion a chain of events that will change everything. And everyone.

Doctor Who Magazine - Issue 473

The cover and details of this month's edition of Doctor Who magazine:

The new issue of Doctor Who magazine harks back to the Seventh Doctor's era as former script editor Andrew Cartmel examines how the series was reinvented for a new generation.

In issue 473, Cartmel catches up with the writers that he employed, with Stephen Wyatt, Malcolm Kohll and Ian Briggs revealing what it was like to write for the show and discussing how they feel their stories paved the way for the modern reinvention of the programme.

Briggs says: "I think it's fantastic. Russell T Davies' approach was a vivid reimagining, taking the basic principles and doing them in a way TV is now made instead of just continuing from the 1980s... that's the great achievement of Russell T Davies - and Steven Moffat, since he took over. Stylistically in both senses, technical style and storytelling style, the show is bang up to date."

Also in the new edition:
  • Producer Marcus Wilson looks back at his work on Doctor Who, including The Day of the Doctor and The Time of the Doctor
  • Showrunner Steven Moffat answers readers' questions
  • DWM pays tribute to the life and times of the late Christopher Barry, one of Doctor Who's most prolific directors
