Doctor Who: Who on Who? Interview with Russell T Davies

On the one-off Doctor Who radio documentary Who on Who?, Russell T Davies confirmed that The Sarah Jane Adventures will return for a fourth series next autumn on CBBC! Filming for the series will start next spring.

Also included in Who on Who? is an audio clip from the final Doctor Who special The End of Time - Part Two. You can listen to the documentary here on BBC iPlayer and read the synopsis can be read below:

Who on Who? marks the end of an era in the history of Doctor Who.
Actor David Tennant interviews executive producer and show-runner Russell T Davies in a special programme broadcast just days before the Time Lord's latest regeneration. Both David and Russell are leaving the series following The End of Time - Part 2 on New Year's Day.
In almost fifty episodes, David's Doctor has encountered - and in some cases defeated - the Sycorax, the Ood and the Judoon; not forgetting the Sontarans, Cybermen and the Daleks.

It's been a journey of impossible things that - quite genuinely - has changed David Tennant's life. And someone who's been with him on this remarkable adventure through time and space - and Cardiff - has been the writer, executive producer and show-runner Russell T Davies.

In a specially recorded interview, David talks to Russell about all things Who.

They discuss why now is the right time for them both to leave the series, and Russell explains why he won't be writing for the show in the future. Russell also reveals how TV shows like ITV's Pop Idol influenced Doctor Who and why the success of the revamped series took the cast and creative team behind it by surprise.

Featuring clips from the last five years of the BBC's most successful drama, Russell also reveals that he declined the BBC's original request for a series about a young Doctor studying at the Time Lord Academy. And Russell suggests that Torchwood - the series he created for the BBC - wouldn't get commissioned today. David Tennant also asks the man, once dubbed by The Independent Newspaper as television's "saviour of Saturday night drama", about his plans for the future.

Who On Who? is a must for all fans of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who: The End of Time - Part Two will broadcast New Year's Day at 6:40pm on BBC One and BBC HD.

When we see the Doctor behaving arrogantly, selfishly or uncontrollably, it’s then that he appears more fallible, and therefore more human?

“The Time Lords were pretty fallible too,” David perseveres. “It’s hubris. It’s Greek. It needed that scale to tell the final story. It’s a tale of the gods, really... but gods who are fallible... and, I suppose, human...”

The latest edition of the Radio Times (5th-11th December) features a Doctor Who themed cover and contains further information regarding the upcoming two-part Christmas and New Year specials The End of Time, read on for further details:

John Simm is back, as the Master, fellow Time Lord and the Doctor’s arch nemesis for nearly four decades. But Russel T Davies wasn’t daunted by the inconvenience of having killed off the Master in 2007 - this is sci-fi, after all: “It’s personal for the Doctor. The Master is his enemy, his opposite, and yet so tantalisingly close to being his soul mate. There’s something epic about their sheer existence - the last two survivors of an ancient race. It’s a clash of the titans. Both of them heading for death, and yet both determined to survive - at any cost!”

The magazine is on sale now at all good newsagents priced £1.10 per copy. In other news: the titles for the Doctor Who Confidential episodes going behind the scenes on both parts of The End of Time have been confirmed as Lords and Masters and Allons-y!.
