Series Six to be Split into Two Parts (UPDATED)

The BBC Press Office have revealed that the next series of Doctor Who is to be split. Read on for full details:

The BBC and Steven Moffat have announced today that the transmission of the next series of Doctor Who, in 2011, will be split into two blocks, transmitting in spring and autumn.

The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.

Steven Moffat said: "The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

UPDATE: Steven Moffat has confirmed that the series split is not as it you'd think it is:

“I kept referring to a mid-season finale. So we are going to make it two series – seven episodes at Easter building to an earth-shattering climax, a cliffhanger we could never normally do because it would be too long before it came back. An enormous game-changing cliffhanger that will change everything. The wrong expression would be to say we are splitting it in two. We are making it two separate series.”

So 2011 will feature two series of Doctor Who, both of what are short lived to seven episodes.

New Doctor Who Video Games - Covers & Info

SOURCES: Here & here

Asylum
have released info on two new Doctor Who video games:

Evacuation Earth - Intendo DS
The Doctor and Amy arrive at the Lake District to watch the humans leave the planet. Suddenly the TARDIS gets lifted from them and bolted onto the evacuation ship. They have to make their way onto the ship before it leaves

As the ship launches it has technical problems and they realise the Silurians have built a ship underneath. The Doctor finds a solution to make the ship work

Suddenly the Dalek ship smashes into the human one and splits the Silurian half off. It’s the Dalek ship that chased the Time Axis into the sun - they weren’t destroyed, they actually made a random jump several hundred years into the past

The Daleks are pleased that they can exact revenge on the Doctor but first they make him fix their ship. The Doctor goes along with their plan but tricks them into bolting the TARDIS onto their ship, which he promptly jumps into and uses to fling them into the nearest black hole.

Return to Earth - Wii
The Doctor and Amy help the SS Lucy Gray to return home to Earth, unravelling a Cyber Plot and preventing the Daleks from retrieving a lost Time Axis along the way.

The Doctor and Amy arrive on a human colony ship returning to Earth after it was rendered uninhabitable by solar flares. Without provocation they are attacked by the ship’s maintenance robots and become separated in the struggle.

The Doctor is eventually led to the ship’s Head Quarters, where he discovers a Cyber Leader has connected himself to the ships AI and is blackmailing it into doing his bidding, or else he’ll kill the crew.

Meanwhile the Cybermen that were hiding in the ship ambush Amy and chase her out into space.

Guide the Doctor and Amy as they face their biggest adventure yet!

Doctor Who: Evacuation Earth is available on Intendo DS and Return to Earth is available on Wii. Both are on sale from 29th October priced £34.99 per copy each.

When CIA agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy, he finds himself unearthing a threat which challenges the entire Human race.

The answers seem to lie within an old, secret British institute, known only as Torchwood. With Rex under attack from all sides, in both the US and the UK, he soon discovers there are forces at work within every level of society, determined to stop Torchwood’s return. As a chain of events across the world links together, the most disparate and unlikely individuals - including a surgeon, a killer, senators and CEOs - a new Torchwood team takes shape. But this time, the threat is much closer to home, as they realize that their greatest enemy is mankind itself…

New Third Doctor Sonic Screwdriver & the Master & Axon

Underground Toys have revealed two new classic Doctor Who toys - exclusive to Forbidden Planet:

The Master & Axon Figure Set
An approaching alien spaceship is detected on monitoring equipment at UNIT HQ, where the Brigadier is entertaining two visitors - Chinn, a civil servant making a security inspection, and Bill Filer, an American agent sent to discuss the threat of the Master. The ship lands in England and the UNIT team meet its occupants a beautiful golden-skinned race of humanoids called Axons. The Axons claim that their ship, Axos, is damaged and that they need time in which to repair it. In return, they offer Axonite, a substance that can cause animals to grow to enormous sizes and thus end global food shortages.

The Doctor is suspicious, and rightly so, Axos, Axonite and the Axons are all part of one hideous parasitic entity brought to Earth by the Master to feed on the planet's energy and consume it. The Doctor manages to materialise his TARDIS, with the Master on board, at the centre of the Axos ship. Outmanoeuvring the Master the Doctor offers to link the two ships together to make one giant time machine, on condition that Axos in return helps him to take revenge on the Time Lords for exiling him to Earth. The trick works, and Axos is locked in a time loop from which it can never escape. The Doctor returns to Earth in the TARDIS, where he reluctantly admits to the Brigadier that the Master has escaped.

In this exclusive Underground Toys action figure set we present the Master, the arch enemy of the Doctor first played by Roger Delgado in the 3rd Doctor adventure Terror of the Autons. This set comprises of both the Master in his iconic suit with his Tissue Compression Eliminator weapon accessory and an Axon creature as they appeared together in the adventure The Claws of Axos. This was the first and only appearance of the Axons.

Third Doctor Sonic Screwdriver
The Sonic Screwdriver is a versatile tool and defensive device first used by The Doctor in his second incarnation for opening up hatches, panels and controls. later uses included cutting through wall sections and even as a conventional screwdriver.

During the third Doctor's exile on Earth he had a larger and more elaborately detailed version, which has a decorated silver handle and black and yellow stripes. This version has even more functions including detecting security traps, remote detonation of mines, opening doors and restraints, creating ignitions sparks and again removing screws and fixings.

In this exclusive release, we present an electronic version of the third Doctor's sonic screwdriver with two sounds and spring loaded sound activation!

Torchwood: The New World Revealed!

Various news sources have confirmed that the overall title for series four of Torchwood is The New World. Read on for 'juicy' info on the title as well as the new series:

The Hollywoord Reporter:

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue.

Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is "like a legend now ... it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers." Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

"The two teams coming together is a big part of the story - are they friends or enemies? There's a lot of sparks and excitement."

"We definitely have a really big story to tell," added executive producer Julie Gardner. "It's absolutely rebooted to welcome in a new audience."

The ten episodes will be very fast paced, telling a self-contained story with the miniseries Children of Earth being used as a template.

Being on Starz, the show could potentially take advantage of looser standards for nudity and violence.

"I've always had loose standards and practices," Davies said. "If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely ... [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene - it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

USA Today:

New is the operative word. The team has left Wales for America, as creator Russell T. Davies has left Britain for Los Angeles. The case will tie the two remaining Torchwood members (Jack and Eve Myles's Gwen) to the CIA, and will expand into a world-wide threat. And yet, says Davies, it "will be faithful" to the BBC original.

Davies says this story, which "had been ticking away in my mind for a long while," had not been planned as a Torchwood story at all. "And suddenly I thought, there's a popular show, there's a great story, let's put them together. It felt like it definitely could move forward and become new again."

Though it will be newer and bigger, the tone won't change, says Davies. Barrowman's Jack will still be TV's only bi-sexual hero, character will still be stressed, and humor will still play a large part in the show's make-up.

"I sit there in the editing room saying 'Don't cut that joke! Cut the plot, cut the murder, cut the story, but don't cut the joke.' It will always be a cheeky show."

Filming for Torchwood: The New World starts January 2011 and will broadcast on BBC One in the UK and Starz in the US the following summer.

Torchwood Comic - Issue 1: The Selkie & Broken: Part 1

The first issue of a new Torchwoood comic series is set to go on sale at Forbidden Planet stores in America on 10th August. Read below for more details:

The hit BBC TV series hits the world of comics!

Tommy Lee Edwards and John Barrowman team up for Titan’s new Torchwood comic!

Acclaimed artist Tommy Lee Edwards, currently working with outspoken TV personality Jonathan Ross on the hit comic series Turf, has teamed up with John Barrowman (Torchwood’s Captain Jack) and his sister and frequent coworker Carole E. Barrowman, to produce Captain Jack and the Selkie.

Captain Jack and the Selkie
is one of two original Torchwood stories in issue #1 and sees Jack facing a deadly threat on a remote Scottish island, where people are disappearing one by one. To his horror, Jack starts to suspect he may know who, or rather what, is responsible.

Barrowman is overjoyed to have worked with Edwards, who he describes as one of his favorite artists. The pair began their collaboration when Barrowman and his sister Carole came across a poster of Captain Jack at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con.

“Tommy and Trevor had drawn a brilliant poster of my face super-imposed over the Face of Boe, which I think is the best piece of Captain Jack art I’ve seen,” said Barrowman.

“The four of us hit it off immediately and I asked if they’d ever be interested in working with us on a Captain Jack project. They thought about it for, oh, about 30 seconds, and so Captain Jack and the Selkie was born!”

The second story is part one of a special five-part story written by Torchwood TV script editor Gary Russell. Entitled Broken, the story sees Captain Jack, Gwen and Ian to get trapped in a cosmic hotel, while an old villain from the TV series returns.

Artwork for Broken is provided by Adrian Salmon, whose work includes the Cybermen for Doctor Who Magazine and Judge Karyn for the Judge Dredd Megazine.

Two collectible covers will be available for each issue - an art cover and a picture cover. British comic book artist Ian Churchill, whose work includes Superman for DC Comics and Avengers, Deadpool, and X-Men for Marvel, has drawn the art cover for issue #1. An alternate cover, also drawn by Churchill, will be available exclusively at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.
