The BBC have issued the first promo image and synopsis for this year's Doctor Who Christmas special:
We’re delighted to confirm that Greg Davies and Matt Lucas will be joining Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special!
Greg Davies is the writer and star of Man Down and his appearance in BBC Three’s Cuckoo earned him a Bafta nomination for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme. He played ‘Mr Gilbert’ in The Inbetweeners and is also a critically acclaimed stand-up comedian.
Matt Lucas is a Bafta TV Award winner who shot to prominence as George Dawes in the anarchic game show Shooting Stars. He went onto achieve huge success alongside David Walliams in shows including Little Britain and Come Fly with Me. He’s also featured in hit movies like Shaun of the Dead and Bridesmaids.
Steven Moffat also made the following comments in Radio Times magazine:
On why he decided to bring River back: "We’ve just lost Clara, so I didn’t want to go straight into a new companion. I’ll be honest, I brought River Song back in because I thought there was a possibility I’d never write it [Doctor Who] again so that’d be my goodbye."
On how the pairing with Twelve works: "It’s strange because they’re now, in our human terms, the perfect couple. They’re both sexy older people. It’s always been slightly strange before with Matt Smith. Now, yeah, they could actually be married. It works."
He also added: "If you’re a long term fan of the show you might be interested because there’s been a lot of talk about the Doctor and River’s glory years but we’ve never seen them. Here at last we see them as Mr and Mrs Who at the height of their powers. It’s great fun."
On when in River’s life it takes place: "It doesn’t really matter, but for those who care it’s immediately after The Angels Take Manhattan. River’s just seen Matt Smith’s Doctor lose Amy and Rory, and obviously before The Name of the Doctor because she’s dead in that."
TITLE TBC - by Steven Moffat
It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy.
King Hydroflax is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.
The as-of-yet untitled Christmas Special will broadcast on Christmas Day on BBC One and BBC One HD, a time is to be confirmed.
