New Doctor Who Themed Radio Times Cover

The current issue of Radio Times magazine features a Doctor Who themed cover promoting the upcoming Christmas special The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, read on for further details:

The new issue of Radio Times, on sale this weekend and covering listings for 3-9 December, features a snowy Doctor Who cover, and a sneak preview of the new Christmas special. Inside, Matt Smith, Alexander Armstrong, Bill Bailey and Arabella Weir talk about making the Christmas episode.

Inside, Matt Smith previews the special: “Whereas last year felt more like a Christmas romp, there’s a slow-burning, ethereal magic to this. We’ve covered a whole forest in snow. The scale is vast and there’s just something wonderfully magical about it because it’s never that snowy in this country, except maybe in Scotland … and on the telly. It does it for you: all the snow and the lovely smell of the pine trees. I’m really, really looking forward to Christmas now.”

Matt also speaks about pulling off his own fiery stunt: “Believe me, the fireball does so much of the acting for you. It was only afterwards that I realised I could have been seriously charred.
“I’ve been really enjoying it. Hopefully we’ll see more action/adventure-y Doctor next season.” and that the Christmas special monster is “going to be ones of our best. The design is classic.”

Bill Bailey describes his Who debut as “the equivalent of a knighthood.”

This issue of Radio Times magazine is on sale from today at all good newsagents until 2nd December priced £1.20 per copy.

FIRST IMAGE FROM 2011 CHRISTMAS SPECIAL RELEASED
The BBC have released the first promotional image for this year's Doctor Who Christmas special, click here to download it. DOCTOR WHO ON CHILDREN IN NEED
More details have come to light on what to expect on BBC Children in Need tonight tomorrow evening for Doctor Who fans. As well as a sneak peek of this year's Christmas special, fans will be treated to a mini sketch written by Steven Moffat for Children in Need, as well as the chance to win the Eleventh Doctor's constume worn in The Doctor Wife earlier this year. Read on for more info:

Fans of Doctor Who will get the chance to own a little piece of the Eleventh Doctor today, as BBC Children in Need auctions off an entire costume from the hit BBC One show - from bow tie and braces to the infamous tweed jacket.

Matt Smith was at BBC Television Centre today filming a special sketch for BBC Children in Need written by Steven Moffat, to be shown during the appeal show on Friday evening. Viewers will get to see just what happens when the Doctor gives bidders the chance to take the clothes off his back...

Matt Smith said: "I hope people donate generously for BBC Children in Need because it's a wonderful cause- and we've got to beat last year's total. I saw Terry Wogan on TV the other night, and thought come on! Let's make more money! So hopefully we can raise a good amount.

"I'd say the tweed jacket or the bow-tie are the most iconic - although the boots are my personal favourite."

Throughout the years, the costumes worn by the many incarnations of the Doctor have been as distinctive as the characters themselves. The highest bidder will be the proud owner of the distinguished time traveller's outfit from the episode The Doctor's Wife, including this tweed jacket, shirt, black jeans, black boots, braces, bow-tie and watch.
The auction for the Doctor's clothes, and a copy of the script written by Steven Moffat and signed by Matt Smith from the specially filmed sketch, are part of BBC Children in Need's Once in a Lifetime online auction being held at www.bbc.co.uk/Pudsey. The auction closes on Monday 21st November.

On the Appeal Night, the title of this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special will be revealed and viewers will be treated to an exclusive sneak peek of the festive adventures in store for the Doctor.

BBC Children in Need broadcasts live on BBC Television Centre tomorrow at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC One HD, more info coming soon.

Doctor Who Movie in the Works?

Online sources are indicating that a Doctor Who movie is in the works and is to be directed by David Yates, who previously directed the latter four Harry Potter films, read on for more details:

Harry Potter director David Yates is teaming up with the BBC to turn its iconic sci-fi TV series Doctor Who into a bigscreen franchise.

Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, told Daily Variety that he is about to start work on developing a Doctor Who movie with Jane Tranter, head of L.A.-based BBC Worldwide Prods.

"We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right," he said. "It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena."

Doctor Who follows the adventures across space and time of a super-intelligent alien in human form, who battles a variety of cosmic bad guys aided by plucky human companions.

"The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time," Yates said.

The series ran from 1963 to 1989, and then was successfully rebooted in 2005 by writer Russell T. Davies and subsequently by Steven Moffat (The Adventures of Tintin). Tranter oversaw the revival when she was the BBC's drama topper in London.

Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith as the 11th incarnation of the Doctor, is now one of the pubcaster's most lucrative global TV franchises. The series airs Stateside on BBC America

Yates made clear that his movie adaptation would not follow on from the current TV series, but would take a completely fresh approach to the material.

"Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch," he said.

Yates and Tranter are looking for writers on both sides of the Atlantic. "We want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too," he explained.

There are two previous films, based on the TV series: Doctor Who and the Daleks (1965) and Doctor Who: Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966), both starring Peter Cushing.

The BBC has since made a few unsuccessful attempts to develop a Doctor Who feature, and shot a one-off telepic in 1996 at a time when the TV series was dormant.

But the combination of Yates and Tranter means this is the most high-powered effort to date to launch Doctor Who onto the bigscreen.

Before directing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Yates worked with Tranter on several BBC TV series, including The Way We Live Now and State of Play.

As stated above, the movie would be an entire reboot from the TV show and apparently it would take over three years to develop the movie before filming would even commence. In other news: According to the BBC Doctor Who Twitter account, more then just a clip/ trailer of this year's Doctor Who Christmas special is to be shown on Children in Need Night this Friday, and that "Doctor Who fans are in for a treat", teasing that maybe a new mini episode is to be shown.
